St. John's Edge News Release
St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge dropped their first game in their last seven contests to the Halifax Hurricanes by a score of 108-100 on Sunday afternoon in Halifax, NS.
The Edge came into this one riding a six-game win streak, with their latest win coming against the league-leading Moncton Magic on Saturday night. Through the first two-quarters of this one, it was back and forth throughout, with both teams changing the lead 5 times through two-quarters of play. St. John's were shooting the ball well from the outside going 7-of-15 from three-point range in the half. However, some solid individual play from the Hurricanes would send them into the break with a three-point lead (51-48).
Coming out of the break the Edge were trading baskets in the early going with the Hurricanes, unable to climb back into the driver's seat as Halifax increased their lead to as many as 11 points late in the third quarter. Moving into the fourth quarter the Edge kept scratching and clawing their way to the hoop reducing the Halifax lead to just single possessions a handful of times throughout. Despite some solid defence and late game buckets, the Edge came up just short on Sunday afternoon.
St. John's were able to get to the free-throw line quite consistently throughout, but the Hurricanes kept answering all afternoon. The Edge were 32-of-78 from the floor for 41.0% shooting while going 11-of-25 from three-point range for 44.0% shooting in the loss. The Hurricanes outscored the Edge in the paint and outrebounded them on way to snapping the six-game win streak.
The offence was once again led by Dez Lee who scored 21 points with 6 rebounds, this was Lee's fifth straight game with 20 or more points. Junior Cadougan also contributed 18 points and dished out 4 assists. Down low the Edge got 13 points and 8 rebounds out of Glen 'Big Baby' Davis, who was near perfect from the free-throw line. Finally, Obie Oleka was able to pull down 14 rebounds and just missed another double-double finishing with 9 points on the afternoon.
For the Hurricanes, they were led by Mike Poole who scored a game-high 30 points and his performance was followed by Jordan Washington who dropped 19 points (17 in the first half).
Your St. John's Edge now look to bounce back and start 2019 in the win column as they will face the Cape Breton Highlanders on Tuesday, January 1st at 7:30 pm NLT.
