St. John's Edge News Release
St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge were looking to stick to their winning ways on the road as they faced the Cape Breton Highlanders on Monday night at Centre 200. The Edge were successful in their second trip to Cape Breton Island as they took down the Highlanders by a score of 105-100.
The pace was set early by Cape Breton as they tried a run and gun style offence to set the Edge back on their heels, but this was just the type of play the Edge were built for. In the early going it was Junior Cadougan and Glen Davis leading the way, the pair would combine for 14 of the team's 24 points in the quarter. After one it was all tied up at 24.
Into the second the Edge got off to a quick start with a made lay-up followed by a Jared Nickens three that would put them up by 5 points. Just as the Edge looked to build on their lead, the Highlanders would climb back into this one. A pair of Carl English three-pointers would keep the Edge on top going into the half as they led by the narrow margin of 45-43.
Going into the third quarter the Edge found themselves in some foul trouble with Glen Davis, Junior Cadougan, and Obie Oleka having 3 fouls each. This would mean that Head Coach Doug Plumb would look to newcomer Olu Ashaolu to step up and play some big minutes in the second half. Olu got off to a good start scoring 9 points in the quarter and nailing a deep three-pointer to keep the Edge in the lead going into the fourth.
In the final quarter, the Edge held a single-digit lead with the Highlanders breathing down their necks. This would mean that Glen 'Big Baby' Davis and Junior Cadougan would check back in to keep the offence rolling. The Edge would build a 7-point lead, but just as they had the momentum the Highlanders shooters would wake up and narrow the gap to just a single possession with about 6 minutes to go in the final frame. Down the stretch, Dez Lee would have a huge blocked shot, which turned into a Junior Cadougan layup to put the Edge back in the driver's seat where they would remain on route to a 105-100 win over Cape Breton.
On the night the Edge were led by Glen 'Big Baby' Davis who would notch 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists in the win. Following suit, Junior Cadougan picked up 20 points on Monday night. Not to be outdone, Dez Lee kept it consistent as he has all year, dropping 18 points. The Edge also got a big double-double from Carl English who dropped 16 points and 10 rebounds in the hard-fought victory.
For the Highlanders, they were led in this one by Bruce Massey who dropped a game-high 36 points in the loss.
The St. John's Edge now have a couple of days before heading to Charlottetown, PEI to face the Island Storm. You can catch this game and all NBL Canada games by visiting www.nblclive.ca.
