Edenton Steamers News Release
The season for the Edenton Steamers begins Tuesday and they have added two more players to their 2017 roster. The Teal and Black have inked Christopher Ramirez and Chris Ayers (AIRS).
Christopher RamÃ-rez will come to the Steamers from the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks out of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in NCAA Division II. The 6'3" 200-pound junior left-hander is coming off a dominant performance in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional when he threw a complete-game, nine-inning shutout with 10 strikeouts and did not walk a batter against tournament host Angelo State University (TX). The Mavericks will open World Series play on Sunday with a 48-10 overall mark and have been ranked in the top 10 for most of the latter half of the spring.
The Oxnard, CA native has been a huge part of that success, taking the ball every weekend and currently boasting a 9-1 record and 3.54 ERA in 76.1 innings pitched. A WHIP of 1.07 and .228 batting average against are accompanied by an 84:18 strikeout-to-walk tally. RamÃ-rez runs the fastball up and down from 84-89 miles per hour; and hitters do not see it well due to his long arms, resulting in a jump effect on the ball as it nears the plate. He complements that pitch with an excellent fading changeup and a slow overhand curve.
Chris Ayers will come to the Clams from the Indiana State University Sycamores out of the Missouri Valley Conference in the NCAA Division I. The 6'2" 195-pound sophomore spent the 2016 summer in the Prospect League with the Terre Haute Rex. The Westfield, IN native posted a .303/.387/.434/.821 slash line in 145 at bats. Ayers also totaled seven doubles, four home runs and swiped 18 bags on 22 attempts.
Ayers is an athletic and toolsy left-handed hitting outfielder, who looks the part and is still converting his talent into skill. He has shown the ability to do a little bit of everything well - hit for average, some pop, steal bases and can play all three outfield positions - and becoming more consistent is the next step for him this summer. The outfielder nursed a groin injury in May with Indiana State but is expected to be full strength to open the summer for the Teal and Black, manning either corner-outfield spot on a given night. Ayers' spring numbers are a .277/.367/.402/.769 slash line with eight doubles, two bombs, a 12.5% walk rate and only one error in 47 defensive chances.
The Edenton Steamers will proudly be celebrating their 20th anniversary season as a member of the Coastal Plain League in 2017. The season will begin on Tuesday May 30th when the Morehead City Marlins visit Historic Hicks Field. Be sure to follow the Teal and Black on social media to stay up to date with all things Steamers.
