
Edenton Falls Apart in Ninth

EDENTON, N.C - Fayetteville (30-24, 1-1) scored four runs in the top of the ninth against the Steamers bullpen to seal a 7-3 win over Edenton (41-12, 1-1) in game two of the best-of-three opening round series in the Coastal Plain League Petitt Cup Playoffs at Historic Hicks Field on Thursday night.
Edenton, in the ninth inning, had three pitchers get dinged for four hits and two walks, there were two errors committed and two balks, allowing four Fayetteville runs to cross the plate, giving the 'Dogs a 7-3 win. With the wind taken from their sails, the Steamers sent four men to the plate and didn't score, dropping game two to the SwampDogs.
Lefty Patrick Peterson (Temple University) got the start in game two against the SwampDogs for Edenton in the potential elimination game for the Steamers. Trying to stave off elimination was Jimmie Davis for the SwampDogs.
Fayetteville, playing their usual small ball, got on the board in the first inning when John Rooney and Mitchell Kranson broke on a delayed steal of second. The throw went down to second base and Kranson was tagged out but breaking for the plate and scoring from third was Rooney for the 1-0 lead.
The Steamers went hitless through three innings against Davis until after Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) walked and Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech University) doubled him to third. The hottest hitting Steamer of late, Chase Harris (University of New Mexico) came up and lined an RBI single to left field to tie the game at 1-1. Harris now has three RBIs in the two Steamer postseason games. With Jacob Reese (Eastern Illinois University) batting, Chad Whitehead the SwampDogs catcher tried to pick-off Kirsch and threw the ball into left field allowing Kirsch to score and Harris to score all the way from first base for a 3-1 Steamers lead.
Fayetteville's Michael Timm walked in the fifth and stole second base. He move to third on a Rooney single and scored on a straight steal of home to cut the lead to 3-2.
Peterson was lifted after five innings, allowing five hits and two runs; he walked four and struck out three.
He did not earn a decision in the game.
Edenton hung on to their one-run lead until the top of the eighth when Andrew Nelson (St. Catharine College) came in and allowed three singles and a sacrifice bunt to tie the game at 3-3.
Edenton, defensively, in the top of the ninth completely fell apart. Three pitchers allowed four hits, two walks, there two errors committed and two balks that allowed four Fayetteville runs to cross the plate and seal the deal on game two. Mitchell Kranson and Derek Gibson both had RBI hits in the inning, for Gibson it was his second RBI of the game.
Edenton sent four men to the plate in the home half of the ninth and took the 7-3 loss in game two t Fayetteville. David, for the 'Dogs pitched four innings, allowing two hits and three runs (one earned); he walked four and struck out five.
David Hart (University of California - San Diego) took the loss for his two-thirds plus innings pitched. He fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the playoffs. Cody Dix picked up the win for his two shut-out innings of relief, improving to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the postseason.
Edenton is now 2-2 against Fayetteville this season and the loss was only the third time all season long Edenton lost at home and it snapped a 20 game home winning streak.
The series continues today in Edenton with the Steamers needing to win at home to advance into the semi-finals for the third fourth straight season. First pitch tonight is at 7 p.m., gates open at 6 p.m. All tickets are $7, for more information please call the Steamers office at 252-482-4080.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
