Eddies Defender Roberts Gives Back at Annual M.E. LaZerte Cancer Fundraiser

Following their first win of the 2016 North American Soccer League (NASL) season against Ottawa Fury FC, April 24 at Clarke Field, FC Edmonton players were given a short break from regular training sessions to recoup and recover. It was the team's longest break since training camp got underway in early February.

Eddies centre back Mallan Roberts used one of his off days to return to his former high school, M.E. LaZerte to participate in the school's 11th annual Tri-4-Cancer fundraiser. Following a two-hour swimming session, three hours of biking and 20-kilometres of running, this year's LaZerte hosted-event raised $35,000 that will go towards Cops for Cancer. Over the course of the previous ten years, LaZerte's fundraising efforts have resulted in over $200,000 for Cops for Cancer.

"It was amazing having Mallan-a very proud Lazerte alumnist-join us for our special day," M.E. Lazerte's Physical Education department head Sergio Teixeria said. "It is truly special for our students to be able to see someone they look up too and can relate too!"

The 23-year-old is an active supporter of his former clubs and schools, recently joining fellow Edmonton Xtreme FC and current Eddies teammate Allan Zebie for a team banquet appearance last February. If his schedule permits, Roberts also plans to visit his junior high school in the near future.

"I felt blessed to get the opportunity to go back [to my old school]," Roberts explained. "Those are my old stomping grounds and it was like a homecoming. That's exactly what it felt like, getting the chance to see my old teachers, seeing some kids that I actually coach. It brought back some memories and was a really good feeling."

Roberts signed with the Eddies' First Team in 2013 and has since made 46 appearances for the club. Last season, the defender's play earned him a call-up to the Canadian senior national team for a pair of camps, where he earned his first senior cap in a World Cup qualifying match against Dominica.
