PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL and its member teams mourn the loss and express their condolences to the family and friends of Florida Everblades co-owner Thomas Thewes, who died Sunday at the age of 76 following a two-year battle with Leukemia.

Thewes was Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors (Emeritus) of the Compuware Corporation which he founded in 1973 with Everblades co-owner Peter Karmanos and Allen Cutting. He, Karmanos and Jim Rutherford acquired the Hartford Whalers of the National Hockey League on June 28, 1994 and moved the team to North Carolina where they became the Carolina Hurricanes in 1997. The Everblades are the ECHL affiliate of the Hurricanes, who were led to the Stanley Cup championship in 2006 by Peter Laviolette, who began his coaching career in the ECHL.

Thewes is survived by his wife, Beverly, six children and 20 grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. on Wednesday at Desmond & Sons Funeral Home in Royal Oak, Mich. with the funeral mass on Thursday at St. Hugo of the Hills Church in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Everest Academy, a school which Thewes help found in 1991, at https://Secure.EverestAcademy.org/Donate.php.
