
ECHL Mourns Loss Of Florida Owner Thewes

PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL and its member teams mourn the loss and
express their condolences to the family and friends of Florida Everblades
co-owner Thomas Thewes, who died Sunday at the age of 76 following a
two-year battle with Leukemia.
Thewes was Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors (Emeritus) of the
Compuware Corporation which he founded in 1973 with Everblades co-owner
Peter Karmanos and Allen Cutting. He, Karmanos and Jim Rutherford acquired
the Hartford Whalers of the National Hockey League on June 28, 1994 and
moved the team to North Carolina where they became the Carolina Hurricanes
in 1997. The Everblades are the ECHL affiliate of the Hurricanes, who were
led to the Stanley Cup championship in 2006 by Peter
Laviolette, who began his coaching career in the ECHL.
Thewes is survived by his wife, Beverly, six children and 20
grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. on Wednesday at Desmond &
Sons Funeral Home in Royal Oak, Mich. with the funeral mass on Thursday at
St. Hugo of the Hills Church in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to
Everest Academy, a school which Thewes help found in 1991, at https://Secure.EverestAcademy.org/Donate.php.
