Eastern League Weekly Award Winners Announced for June 3rd-June 9th

SCARBOROUGH, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of June 3rd through June 9th:

Richmond Flying Squirrels first baseman/outfielder Zach Houchins has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of June 3rd-June 9th. The 26-year old batted .423 (11-for-26) with two doubles, four home runs, 12 RBIs, eight runs scored, three walks, and a .962 slugging percentage in seven games for the Flying Squirrels last week. Houchins, who is a native of Wilson, North Carolina, had at least one hit in six of the seven games he played in last week and had multiple hits in five of those games. That included hitting home runs in back-to-back games at New Hampshire on Friday and Saturday night. The 6'2", 210 lb. slugger led all Eastern League hitters in home runs (4), RBIs (12), slugging percentage (.962), OPS (1.428), runs scored (8), total bases (25), and hits (11) last week and also finished ranked among the weekly league leaders in batting average (.423-2nd) and on-base percentage (.467-5th). Zach is hitting .275 with five homers, 16 RBIs and 16 runs scored in 22 games since joining the Flying Squirrels as a minor league free agent on May 18, 2019. He was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 13th round of the 2014 draft out of East Carolina University.

Rico Garcia, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Hartford Yard Goats, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 3rd-June 9th. The 5'11", 190 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the Yard Goats last week and had a record of 2-0 with 15 strikeouts and a 0.75 ERA. Garcia, who is a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, made his first appearance of the week on Tuesday against the visiting Trenton Thunder and fired six no-hit innings in Hartford's 3-0 victory. He struck out 11 of the 19 batters he faced and the only two runners that reached base against him both came on errors. The no-hitter was eventually broken up in with one out in the top of the ninth inning. Rico made his second start of the week on Sunday against the visiting Binghamton Rumble Ponies and earned the win in Hartford's 3-1 victory. He gave up one run on three hits while striking out four batters and walking three over six innings of work to improve his record to 8-1 on the season. The 25-year old led all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (15) last week and tied for the lead in wins (2). He also ranked among the weekly leaders in innings pitched (12.0-tied 2nd), batting average against (.083-3rd), WHIP (0.50-3rd), and ERA (0.75-8th). Rico, who leads the league in wins (8) and ranks second in strikeouts (85) and fourth in ERA (1.88), was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 30th round of the 2016 draft out of Hawaii Pacific University.
