
Eastern League announces Eastern League award winners

PORTLAND, ME â The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending May 8th:
Akron Aeros outfielder Jason Cooper has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending May 8th. The Moses Lake, Washington native had an excellent week for the Aeros, hitting .440 (11-for-25) with one double, two triples, two home runs, seven runs scored, four RBI, two walks and a .880 slugging percentage. The 25-year old had a hit in all seven games he played in last week and had multiple hits in four of those games, raising his batting average over 60 points during the week and extending his current hitting streak to eight games. For the season Cooper is hitting .233 with three doubles, two triples, four home runs, 18 RBI and 17 runs scored. Jason was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the third round of the June 2002 draft out of Stanford University.

Edwin Almonte, a right-handed pitcher for the Erie SeaWolves, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 8th. The 29-year old appeared in four games for the SeaWolves last week and had four saves with seven strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. In his first three appearances of the week the 6'3", 220 lb. hurler picked up saves against the Harrisburg Senators and gave up just one hit and struck out five batters in three innings of work. In his final appearance of the week Almonte struck out a pair of batters and did not allow a runner to reach base while picking up a save against the Binghamton Mets. Edwin, who currently has a league-best 10 saves this season, was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a Minor League Free Agent on February 8, 2005.
