South Carolina Stingrays News Release
THE MATCHUP
The South Carolina Stingrays visit the Wheeling Nailers for Game 4 of the 2016 Eastern Conference Finals this evening. Entering tonight's contest, the Nailers lead the series, 2-1. After the two teams split the first two games in North Charleston, the Nailers grabbed a series lead with a 2-1 win on Wednesday night at WesBanco Arena. Both squads are coming off lengthy series in the Conference Semifinals. Last Wednesday, the Stingrays defeated Adirondack in double-overtime in Game 7 on a Joe Devin goal, while the Nailers took down the Reading Royals in Game 7 in overtime on a Riley Brace goal. The Stingrays and Nailers met twice during the regular season with both games taking place in Wheeling. South Carolina was 1-1-0-0 versus the Nailers in those games. The winner of the Eastern Conference Finals will play the winner of the Allen Americans/Fort Wayne Komets series in the Kelly Cup Finals.
GAME 3 RECAP
For the second straight game, the Wheeling Nailers erased a third period deficit to earn the comeback victory. Austin Fyten scored for South Carolina to give the Stingrays a 1-0 lead through 40 minutes of action. However, Wheeling scored twice in the third period to secure the win. Jarrett Burton evened the score on tic-tac-toe passing, and Derek Army's wrist shot from the left wing with just over six minutes remaining proved to be the game-winning tally. Wheeling outshot South Carolina 31-19 in the victory.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING!
South Carolina's lone goal in Game 3 on Wednesday extended the point-streak of two top forwards for the Stingrays. Goal scorer Austin Fyten, who is tied for first on the team with 15 points in the playoffs, extended his point-streak to seven games. He has eight points (four goals, four assists) in that stretch. David Pacan assisted on the goal, giving him points (one goal, six assists) in six straight games.
STOPPING THE COMEBACK
Wheeling earned their 21st come-from-behind victory (regular season and postseason combined) and 11th third period comeback win in Game 3. South Carolina does not allow comebacks often as the club was 33-1-1-0 when leading after two periods in the regular season, and have earned eight of their nine playoff wins by holding a third period lead.
HISTORY IN WHEELING
All-time, the Stingrays are 2-9 versus Wheeling in the playoffs, and 1-4 at WesBanco Arena. Games 4 and 5 are in Wheeling, while if necessary, Games 6 and 7 are in South Carolina.
GAME 4 HISTORY
During the 2016 Kelly Cup Playoffs, the Stingrays are 2-0 in Game 4 of a series. The Stingrays earned a victory over Kalamazoo on home ice in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals as Joe Devin struck in the final minute of the game on the power play to give the Stingrays a 3-1 series lead. In the Eastern Conference Semifinals versus Adirondack, the Stingrays trailed 2-1 in the series entering Game 4 on the road. South Carolina posted a big 6-0 win at Glens Falls Civic Center to even the series.
