Earthquakes Forward Dwayne De Rosario Tears Lateral Collateral Ligament in Right Knee

San Jose (Friday, April 4, 2003) - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that forward Dwayne De Rosario has suffered a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. De Rosario, who has been recovering throughout the preseason from a broken bone in his right foot suffered while training with the Canadian National Team in January, injured the knee in the Earthquakes scrimmage against San Jose State University on Thursday, April 3.

Earthquakes team physician Dr. Arthur Ting will perform surgery on the knee on Monday, April 7, and De Rosario is expected to be out for the season.

"This is devastating news for Dwayne and the club," said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. "He had made a good recovery from his broken foot and was performing well in practice. We are going to miss Dwayne, but we have a good group of players here and we just need to continue to prepare for our season opener on April 12 against Colorado."

De Rosario, 24, reported to training Friday morning with soreness in his right knee, and the knee was evaluated at that time by the Earthquakes medical staff, who discovered the injury. De Rosario underwent a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) on Friday afternoon and the tear was confirmed. De Rosario has played two seasons with the Earthquakes, scoring nine goals and registering two assists. The Scarborough, Canada native has made 16 appearances for the Canadian National Team since 1998, scoring two goals.
