Hartman Not Looking Over His Shoulder

Published on April 5, 2003 under Major League Soccer (MLS) Source: News Release

Los Angeles Galaxy goalkeeper Kevin Hartman is as much a Californian as any player on the defending MLS Cup champions. Born in Palo Verdes and a former 'keeper at UCLA, the 28-year-old was, however, prepared to leave the state and a six-year Galaxy career during the offseason.

"I love L.A. and I've been here for a long time, but I wanted to be in a healthy situation," Hartman said. "I'm not so rooted here in Los Angeles that I would be afraid to leave. I was ready to leave if need be ... I wasn't looking forward to leaving but at the same time, I have the type of personality that can fit in in any situation."

The healthy situation he was looking for was one that did not have him splitting time with another former Galaxy goalkeeper, Matt Reis, who played in his fifth season with the Galaxy last season.

Martino Takes Over Reins of Crew Attack

It was more than a year ago that a scrawny kid with a shaved head made his MLS debut on Opening Day 2002 at Columbus Crew Stadium, entering the match for the Crew with three minutes remaining. In a short year Kyle Martino has come a long way from an unproven Nike Project-40 player to U.S. National Team material.

The 22-year-old Westport, Connecticut native has not only won himself a starting spot in Columbus but he has earned an identity as the next in a rare breed of No. 10 playmakers, the likes of which have become a scarce commodity in world soccer these days.

"He's clearly a No. 10," said Crew Head Coach Greg Andrulis. "He doesn't wear the No. 10 for us because Brian Maisonneuve has it but that's the role we expect him to play with us."

Pineda Chacon Ready To Seize Opportunity

All he wants is that one minute, a single moment. One opportunity in front of goal to prove his natural goal-scoring abilities.

Honduran midfielder/forward Alex Pineda Chacon kicks off the 2003 season with the Los Angeles Galaxy and starts the campaign on Sigi Schmid's bench. The experienced player arrives in Los Angeles after his years with Olimpia of Honduras, the Miami Fusion (where he won the 2001 Honda MVP award) and most recently the New England Revolution in 2002, a season which he would rather forget.

Pineda Chacon Buscando Una Oportunidad

THIS DAY IN MLS HISTORY - April 4, 2001

On April 4, 2001 Ramiro Corrales made his return to San Jose and his home state of California. The 2000 U.S. Olympian signed a contract on this day after Quakes Head Coach Frank Yallop had obtained the rights to the player from the MetroStars on Feb. 22 in exchange for goalkeeper Paul Grafer.

"I am excited to have Ramiro in time for the season," said Yallop at the time. "He is a solid defender and he gives us more options in the back. He should be an important contributor for us this season."

Corrales' contributions would not be insignificant for the Earthquakes. He played in 14 matches in 2001 including a start in MLS Cup 2001 vs. the L.A. Galaxy. He also registered the third most minutes played on the squad in 2002, in what was arguably his most productive season as a professional.
