TULSA, Oklahoma - The Dallas Burn dropped a 3-0 decision in an exhibition match against the Kansas City Wizards today before 14,025 fans today at Skelly Stadium on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
Kansas City struck for the first goal in the eighth minute of the match as Chris Brown finished a clinical cross from Preki. Preki collected a loose ball just outside the right corner of the box and sent a cross just over the head of Burn defender Carl Bussey at the far post. Brown collected the cross and slotted a left-footer into the lower right corner of the goal.
The Wizards nearly doubled the lead just minutes before the end of the first half. A Burn corner kick was cleared out of the box starting a fast break the other way with Chris Klein receiving the ball at midfield. Klein brought the ball to the top of the box before laying it off for Francisco Gomez just to the left of the goal. Gomez's one-timer toward the far post was smothered by Burn 'keeper DJ Countess.
Dallas came within inches of equalizing in the 60th minute only to be denied by Kansas City 'keeper Tony Meola. Chad Deering brought the ball into the box and unleashed a shot from about 13 yards out toward the left corner.
Meola, however, made a diving save, smothering the ball on the goal line.
Meola came up huge again in the 70th minute, sprawling to deny a Jason Kreis header that was destined for the lower right corner. The Wizards doubled the lead in the 77th minute as Gomez sprung Brown down the right flank. Brown brought the ball into the box and past a charging Countess for the 2-0 margin. Kansas City added an insurance goal from Chris Klein in the 82nd minute.
The Burn opens the 2003 MLS season next Saturday as they host the 2002 MLS Cup Champion Los Angeles Galaxy at 3:00 p.m. at Dragon Stadium in Southlake.
* The Burn was without the services of Oscar Pareja, Tenywa Bonseu and Shavar Thomas for today's match. Pareja remained in Dallas due to pain in his right knee while Bonseu and Thomas have not returned from national team duties with Uganda and Jamaica, respectively.
