San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced a series of events taking place in the East Bay area this summer as they continue to expand their support of community soccer throughout Northern California. The signature events will be the grand opening of an indoor futsal court and a community futsal tournament featuring Quakes alumni Shea Salinas and Victor Bernardez.
"After successful community engagements in Salinas and Morgan Hill, we are excited to support the soccer community in San Leandro and Newark," said Earthquakes Vice President of Marketing, Tutul Rahman. "When we first approached Sheriffs and the communities in this region, we were inspired by their commitment to growing the sport and supporting the local youth. We are proud to work with them on these initiatives."
In collaboration with Sheriffs FC, the Earthquakes will host a community futsal tournament at the Sunset Futsal Courts in San Leandro on Friday, June 23. The event, which welcomes all ages to participate in pick-up futsal matches, will headline a match captained by Quakes legends Shea Salinas and Victor Bernardez. The Quakes will donate $25 and up to $5,000 to the Sheriffs FC organization for each participant that signs up to play. The event coincides with Eden Night Live, a family-friendly placemaking event to celebrate the arts, culture, food, recreation, small business, and community every month. Participants interested in registering to play in pick-up matches can sign up.
In addition, the Quakes are also partnering with San Leandro community leaders on the grand opening of an indoor futsal court in the city. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will unveil the brand-new court, as well as a special exterior mural inspired by a celebration of East Bay Soccer. More information, including the unveil date, will be announced at a later date.
The Earthquakes will continue to have a strong presence in the East Bay communities throughout 2023 through community events, watch parties and other activities. The community engagement in this area is part of the club's focus on growing the sport at the grassroots level ahead of the club's 50th anniversary in 2024 and the FIFA World Cup in 2026. The Quakes kicked off this effort earlier this year in Salinas and in Morgan Hill and will continue to engage numerous Northern California communities in the coming months and in the future.
