Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(WICHITA, Kan.) - The Hooks jumped on Wichita spot starter Wes Wilkerson for six runs on eight hits in the first three innings, and cruised Saturday to a 7-2 win at Lawrence-DuMont Stadium. The result allows the Hooks to keep pace with first-place Midland in the Texas League West. The RockHounds rolled to a big win over Springfield Saturday.
Second baseman Eric Riggs and designated hitter J.R. Phillips each provided RBI doubles in a three-run top half of the first. The Hooks added two more runs in the second on a sacrifice fly by Riggs and a double steal executed by Josh Anderson and Mike Rodriguez. In the third, Phillips opened the frame with a double and scored when Charlton Jimerson followed with a triple into the right field corner.
Riggs, who has hit safely in 10 straight games, went 2-for-4 Saturday with a run and two RBI's. Phillips and Rodriguez were each 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Anderson scored three runs and stole two bases in his 1-for-4 night.
Corpus Christi starter Philip Barzilla (6-6) was the benefactor of all the early offense. The lefty won for the fourth time in his last five starts, charged with two runs and nine hits in 5.1 innings. He got plenty of help from the bullpen combo of Jamie Merchant and Jailen Peguero. The pair tossed 3.2 innings of shutout relief.
The series at Wichita concludes with a 4:00 pm game on Sunday. Corpus Christi, gunning for a series split, will have RHP Peter Bauer (2-2, 2.81) on the hill. Wichita will send RHP Ryan Baerlocher (7-3, 2.64) to the mound.
