Early Lead Disappears in 6-3 Bears Loss
The Yakima Bears lost 6-3 against the Vancouver Canadians Sunday afternoon at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Bears led 1-0 after one inning and 3-1 after three innings, but neither of those leads held up.
The Bears scored in the first inning when Josh Parr reached after being hit by a pitch, then stole second base, and came home on a two-out single by Wagner Mateo. After a solo home run for the Canadians tied the game in the second, Shaun Cooper hit a two-run home run to plate Michael Lang and himself in the third inning. The Bears 3-1 lead was cut to 3-2 in the fourth when a two-out triple was followed by a double. In the fifth inning two singles, a double, and a key error on a double play ball led to three runs. The Canadians finished the scoring in the seventh inning with another solo home run.
The Canadians outhit the Bears 8-4, including three doubles, a triple, and two home runs. Cooper finished 1-for-3 with the home run and a walk, as he was the highlight for the Bears offensively.
Bears starter Derrick Stultz took the loss after allowing four earned runs and five runs total on six hits and no walks over four and a third innings. Victor Capellan allowed one run in two and two thirds innings and Jose Jose tossed a scoreless ninth.
The series between the Bears and Canadians is now tied at 1-1 with three games still to play. Monday's game three is scheduled for 7:05 at Nat Bailey Stadium. Right-handed pitcher Kyle Owings of the Bears is expected to start for the Bears, while right-handed pitcher Ben White is the probable starter for the Canadians.
