San Jose Giants News Release
SAN BERNARDINO - The San Jose Giants exploded for 14 runs over the first four innings in a 14-2 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers on Tuesday evening at San Manuel Stadium. San Jose jumped out to a 14-1 lead after just 3 1/2 innings and collected 19 hits in the contest en route to the blowout win.
Ryan Lollis (4-for-6, 2B, RBI) had four hits and Joe Panik (2-for-4) scored four times to lead the offensive onslaught. Adam Duvall (3- for-6, 2B, RBI) added three hits for the Giants while Ricky Oropesa (1- for-5, 3B, 3 RBI) drove home three runs. Every San Jose starter had recorded a hit in the game by the end of the third inning.
Taylor Rogers (3-6) matched a season-high with seven innings pitched to pick-up the win. Rogers scattered nine hits with two runs (both earned) allowed during his stint on the mound. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
The Giants jumped on 66ers starting pitcher Brian Diemer for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. Consecutive singles from Lollis and Panik started the game before both runners came home when Oropesa lined a one-out triple into the right field corner.
San Jose then batted around in both the second and third innings combining for 10 runs on 12 hits over the two frames to blow the game open. The six-run top of the second began with a Chris Lofton single and a steal of second base. Lollis then ripped an RBI double to deep right center field for a 3-0 lead. After Panik singled, Duvall delivered an RBI single for the second run of the inning. A balk then advanced the runners to second and third and after Oropesa struck out, Andrew Susac grounded a single to left. On the hit, Panik scored from third base while Duvall also came home on the play when left fielder Brennan Gowens bobbled the ball for an error.
The rally continued as Jarrett Parker singled to put runners on first and second before Devin Harris clubbed an RBI double into the right center gap. Bobby Haney followed with a sacrifice fly to left bringing home Parker with the sixth run of the inning.
The Giants kept the pressure on with four more runs in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 12-0. A walk to Panik began the rally before Duvall doubled to put runners on second and third. Oropesa's groundout plated Panik with the first run and then Susac grounded another RBI single into left for a 10-0 advantage. Parker followed with a double to again put two runners in scoring position with a wild pitch bringing home Susac. Harris then grounded out to third to score Parker making it 12-0.
Inland Empire scored their first run of the night in the bottom of the third inning as Rolando Gomez led off with a triple before coming home two batters later on Taylor Lindsey's single. The 66ers then loaded the bases with two outs against Rogers, but the San Jose starter induced Gowens to groundout ending the inning.
The Giants responded with two runs in the top of the fourth as Lollis led off with a single before Duvall singled with one out and then Oropesa walked to load the bases. After Susac struck out, Parker was hit by a pitch to score one run while Harris followed by reached base on an error to plate San Jose's 14th and final run of the contest.
Diemer (0-2) suffered the loss for Inland Empire after he was tagged for eight runs (all earned) on nine hits over 1 1/3 innings of work. He walked one and struck out one.
The 66ers' last run came in the bottom of the fifth as three consecutive singles from Gomez, C.J. Cron and Lindsey to start the inning made it 14-2. Rogers though induced the next hitter, Randal Grichuk, to bounce into a double play before Jett Bandy grounded out to end the inning.
Rogers pitched around a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth and then tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning to complete his outing. Rogers retired eight out of the last nine batters that he faced.
Phil McCormick (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) and Josh Osich (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings respectively out of the bullpen to seal the victory.
