Holly Springs, North Carolina - The Wilmington Sharks saw their losing streak extend to four games with a 7-6 loss to the Holly Springs Salamanders Friday night at Ting Stadium. The loss dropped the Sharks to 6-6 in the second half of play. With the game tied at six in the bottom of the seventh, Jake Holtzapple led off with a double for the Salamanders. He advanced to third on a passed ball. After the Sharks intentionally walked Chris Crabtree, AJ Hrica grounded into a fielder's choice to score Holtzapple and give the Salamanders the lead.
The Sharks got things going offensive against Salamanders starter Holden Cook. After the Sharks fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first on a two-out throwing error by catcher Aaron McKeithan, Chad Fairey led off the top of the second with a solo home to tie the game. With two outs, Tucker Greer drew a walk and stole second. McKeithan followed with a double to put the Sharks on top.
With two outs and two on in the bottom of the second, Sharks third baseman Clemente Inclan fielded a ground ball but overthrew second base, extending the inning and allowing the tying run to score. Holtzapple then drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch advanced the runners and gave the Salamanders the lead. Chris Crabtree then hit a three-run home run to make it 6-2 Salamanders.
The Sharks began to chip away when Jonah Beamon led off with a single in the top of the third. He stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on an error to make it 6-3. Greer and McKeithan drew back-to-back walks to begin the fourth. A wild pitch advanced them to second and third. Tilo Skole then grounded out to second, scoring Greer and advancing McKeithan to third.
Beamon followed with a sacrifice fly to score McKeithan, cutting the deficit to 6-5. With two outs in the fifth, Inclan hit a solo home run to tie the game at six.
One of the big bright spots in the game for the Sharks was Alex Fenton. After Crabtree's home run, Fenton entered the game in relief of Sharks starter Shaddon Peavyhouse, who was making his Sharks debut on the mound. Fenton pitched the rest of the game giving up only the go ahead run in the seventh off three hits and struck out five.
