Eagles Open up Regular Season with a Split

The Soo Eagles opened up their 2014-15 North American Hockey League season last weekend, as they split a pair of games with the Janesville Jets, at Pullar Stadium.

Soo Eagles 3, Janesville Jets 2 - Friday, September 12, 2014

The Soo Eagles came from behind to defeat the Janesville Jets, 3-2, in the season opener for both clubs, in front of 769 fans at Pullar Stadium.

It didn't take long for the opening goal, as some strong Jets fore-checking got a loose puck to Drew Callin, who put the first shot of the game past Sean Keating, for a 1-0 Jets lead.

Bruno Birzitis would tie things early in the 2nd period for the Eagles, as the veteran forward tapped home a pass from Sandis Zolmanis to tie the game at 1-1.

Callin would answer for the Jets with his second goal of the game late in the 2nd period.

The Eagles scored twice in the 3rd period, including another early goal, as a loose puck bounced out to the high slot, where Raymond Brice would bury a slapshot past Matt Jurusik.

The game-winner came with just under six minutes to go as Birzitis would score his second of the game as he was left all alone on the back door to tap in a goal to make the final 3-2.

Janesville Jets 4, Soo Eagles 3 - Saturday, September 13, 2014

Brandon Schultz scored twice, including the game-winning goal late in the 3rd period, as the Janesville Jets earned a weekend split against the Soo Eagles with a 4-3 win on Saturday night.

After a scoreless 11 minutes to open the game, Janesville scored first on their first power play of the game. as Kyle Patava found the back of the net.

The lead didn't last long. as less than two minutes later, Trevor Cope scored to tie the game at 1-1.

With :46 seconds remaining in the 1st period, Schultz scored his first of the game to put Janesville ahead 2-1.

Drew Callin scored his third goal of the weekend to put the Jets up 3-1 in the 2nd period, but the Eagles responded with goals from Cope and one from Sandis Zolmanis.

Schultz's game-winner came with just about nine minutes to go in the game.
