Dutchmen Send Six to Elmira For First-Ever PGCBL All-Star Game
July 12, 2011 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Albany Dutchmen News Release
The Albany Dutchmen will have six players representing the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League East Division in next Monday's first-ever PGCBL All-Star Game. Both teams, East and West, are made up of a nine player batting lineup (including DH), four reserves and 10 pitchers. They were voted upon by all eight of the league's head coaches.
Four of the nine starters in the East lineup are Dutchmen players including catcher Dain McNabb (Middle Tenn. State), first basemen Steve Anderson (Georgetown), utility infielder Brandon Trinkwon and outfielder Andrew Deeds (Morehead State). Steven Poche (SE Louisiana) and reliever Austin Chase (UAlbany) were named to the pitching squad. Utility infielder Anthony Turgeon (Central Conn. State) was named to the reserves.
McNabb leads the entire PGCBL with a .383 batting average and leads all Dutchmen with a .550 slugging percentage and 33 total bases. Transitioning between catcher and DH, the Albany slugger was named Spotlight Player of the Week after batting .500 in the first week of the season.
Anderson has been the Dutchmen's top source of power this year. He leads the Dutchmen with three home runs and 17 RBIs. His power was highlighted in a June 21 13-5 win over the Newark Pilots after he blasted a grand slam over the right field fence.
Trinkwon, a speedy second basemen, has been a spark plug for Albany in the leadoff role all season. He currently leads the Dutchmen and is fourth in the PGCBL with 11 stolen bases. Starting a team-leading 20 games, Trinkwon is first on the team with 24 hits and 16 runs.
Deeds has been a source of consistency for the Dutchmen, batting .321 on the season with 18 hits, 12 RBIs and 14 runs. The center fielder's glove has also shined this season including on Sunday when he gunned down an Amsterdam Mohawk at the plate to save a second-inning run in a 9-3 victory.
Poche, a starter for the Dutchmen, has come onto the scene strong as of late after pitching a complete four-hit shutout against the Elmira Pioneers on July 6. Through four starts, the lefty has a 2.95 earned run average and 19 strikeouts in 21.1 innings pitched.
Chase, a local standout at UAlbany, has been consistent for Albany all season. Through six appearances, including one start, he has put together a 1-0 record, posting a 1.72 ERA in 15.2 innings of work.
Much like Deeds, Turgeon has also put together solid production for the Dutchmen all season. Spending most of his time at third base, the Albany infielder has strung together a .302 average with 19 hits and 24 total bases through 18 games started. He is also tied for the most season appearances on the team at 21.
The all-star game will take place at Elmira's Dunn Field on Mon., July 18, at 7:05 p.m. The format will pit the all-stars of the PGCBL East against the all-stars of the PGCBL West. There will be a Home Run Derby at 6:00 p.m. and participants will be announced at a later date.
