Amarillo, TX 6/10/09 - With his outstanding performance in this past weekend's victory, the af2 awarded Amarillo Dusters defensive back Gerard Lewis Defensive Player of the Week.
Lewis, 24 (5/21/1985), was involved in 9 tackles versus Rio Grande Valley, along with a forced fumble, a pass breakup, and a game-high 2 interceptions. His last interception as the game clincher. With Rio Grande Valley attempting to tie the game with less than 30 seconds to play, Lewis stepped in the way for his second interception of the night. He returned the pick 14 yards for a touchdown to seal the win for the Dusters.
"Everyone [on defense] did something on Gerard's final interception," noted Dusters head coach Ben Bennett. "Gerard went to the right spot, stepped in and made a play. We have emphasized all season long, if our players do what we tell them to do, and where they are supposed to be, they will have an opportunity to make plays like Gerard's."
Lewis is now tied for the team lead in interceptions (3), pass breakups (7), and ranks second on the Dusters in tackles (33).
Amarillo (2-8) will take on the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings on Saturday, June 13 at the Amarillo Civic Center. To order your tickets, call Amarillo Sports Central at (806) 350-PASS.
