September 8, 2009 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Tri-City Dust Devils News Release
Like driving through a small town or a particularly moving episode of The Wonder Years, Monday's game at Gesa Stadium seemed like it was over before it started. There were no tears shed at the end, however, as the Tri-City Dust Devils beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 2-0 in a one hour, 44 minute game. With the win, the Dust Devils gain a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-five Northwest League Championship Series.
The pitching staff carried the day for Tri-City, as Sheng-An Kuo made the start and gave up just three hits in seven innings. He was relieved by Northwest League all-star relievers Craig Bennigson and Charles Ruiz, who each delivered shutout innings, with Ruiz striking out the side in order to earn the save.
The Dust Devils scored both their runs in the sixth, as Joey Wong led off the inning with a single and was driven in by a Tim Wheeler double. After Joe Scott advanced Wheeler to third on a sacrifice bunt, Ben Paulsen drove in Wheeler with a single to center.
Game Two will be Tuesday night at Gesa Stadium. Good seats are still available at the Dust Devils' box office or at 544-8789. Game Three, as well as Games Four and Five (if necessary) will be in Salem-Keizer.
