Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Central Islip, NY- The Bridgeport Bluefish (7-5, 37-45) were defeated by the Long Island Ducks (8-2, 48-32) 5-1 at Bethpage Ballpark on Tuesday evening in the opener of a three-game midweek series between cross-sound foes. The Ducks win their fifth consecutive game overall, while handing the Bluefish their second straight loss following a season-high five game winning streak. The Flock improve to 9-2 against the 'Fish in 2016 as the Ferry Cup Series continues, increasing to a lead of two games over Bridgeport for First Place in the Second Half of the Liberty Division Standings.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher David Kubiak (3-2) was tagged with the loss, his first defeat since moving to the starting rotation. The right hander surrendered just two runs (one earned run) on five hits in five innings of work, walking one and throwing a wild pitch while matching a season-high in strikeouts with six. Long Island Starting Pitcher Dustin Richardson did not factor in the game's final outcome, firing four scoreless innings, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out four. The southpaw was making his first game start in 2016 after nine prior relief appearances. Kevin Vance (3-1) was victorious in relief for the home team, lasting two innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out one.
Long Island had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the home half of the second inning against Kubiak, but did not cash in on the chance. Dan Lyons led off the frame reaching on a throwing error by Josh Prince, and hustled all the way from first to third base on a wild pitch by Kubiak that could not be immediately handled by his battery mate Jose Gil. Kubiak stranded Lyons and third base by striking out Tyler Colvin swinging, and Ruben Gotay and Mike Dowd both looking. The pitcher's duel produced nothing but goose eggs on the scoreboard until the bottom half of the fifth inning, when the Ducks were finally able to take the lead. Gotay began the rally with a leadoff walk. With two outs, All-Star Fehlandt Lentini reached on an infield single to put two men on for Delta Cleary Jr., who brought home Gotay with the game's first run lacing an RBI single to right field, and as Welington Dotel's attempt to throw out Gotay at home plate got away from Gil and Kubiak, Lentini hustled home all the way from second base on Dotel's throwing error to give the Flock a 2-0 advantage.
Bridgeport cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning against Vance as Dotel got some retribution for his miscue just a half-inning before when he drove home Adron Chambers with a two-out opposite field single to right after Chambers reached with a base knock of his own earlier in the frame. With the tying-run ninety feet away in Anthony Giansanti, Vance preserved the lead by inducing All-Star Jose Cuevas to ground into an inning-ending fielder's choice. Looking for insurance, Long Island got exactly that after the fans stretched out their arms and legs in the seventh. With Paul Demny coming out of the bullpen, Cody Puckett picked up his first hit of the ballgame in timely fashion with a bases-clearing double, and the Ducks enjoyed their largest lead of the night at 5-1 and never looked back. Luis Hernandez singled off Richardson to open up the contest, extending his hitting and on-base streak to a team-high 18 consecutive games. Dotel led the way for Bridgeport with a pair of base knocks.
