Barnstormers Flatten Bees

In fact, by the time the series opener against the New Britain Bees ended, 26 different Barnstormers batters reached first without creating an out. Seventeen of them had hits, seven walked and two were hit by a pitch.

It all added up to a 12-2 victory over the Bees behind a complete game effort by Terry Doyle.

Jeff Kobernus led the attack with four hits. Seven different Barnstormers scored, eight drove in runs, and only Caleb Gindl failed to reach base at least twice.

New Britain only reached Doyle in the second inning. Craig Maddox and Jonathan Roof each singled up the middle, and Greg Golson lined a single into right to load the bases. Michael Crouse tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly. After Golson was cut down trying to steal second, Jon Griffin put the Bees ahead with another single to right.

James Skelton opened the third with a walk, and Jake McGuiggan followed with a bunt single to the third base side of the mound.

From there, the game belonged to Doyle (4-4) and the Barnstormers. The right-handed only allowed one more batter to reach base, Anthony Hewitt on an error in the eighth. He walked one and struck out 10, becoming the first Lancaster pitcher to reach double digits in K's this season.

The Barnstormers took charge in the fifth. Sean Gleason (2-4) hit newcomer Dean Wilson with an 0-2 pitch. Jeff Kobernus reached on an infield single. Wilson, on the move with the pitch, reached third on the play. Blake Gailen slapped a single into left center to tie the game. One out later, Josh Bell singled into right to score Kobernus. Mike Jacobs walked, and Sean Halton made it 5-2 with a two-run single yanked to left.

In the seventh, four walks off reliever Brandon Fry set up Lancaster for another four-run inning. The 'Stormers finished off their night with three two-out runs in the ninth, two on a single by Jacobs.

Lancaster takes on New Britain in a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday. In a 12:05 start, Anthony Fernandez (0-0) will square off against Shawn Haviland (2-3). At 6:35, the Barnstormers will start Tanner Peters (4-3) against lefty Anthony Marzi (1-0). Fans can tune into both on the Lancaster Barnstormers YouTube Channel, starting 20 minutes prior to each game.

NOTES: The Barnstormers tied their season highs with 17 hits and seven walks...Kobernus had the first four-hit game by a Barnstormer since Kevin Ahrens on June 15...The last 10-K performance was turned in by Nate Reed on September 4, 2015...Gailen passed Danny Gonzalez for third place on the career hits list for the Barnstormers...Lancaster's only extra base hit was a double by Bell in the ninth.
