Dubuque Sweeps Weekend with 4-2 Victory over Cedar Rapids

September 14, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

In game two of the preseason Dubuque looked every bit as sharp as game one as they skated to a 4-2 win over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Riese Gaber tallied two points including the game winning goal and Dubuque killed off a minute-plus of 6 on 4 action to end the game with the win. The Saints outscored the RoughRiders 9-4 in the two preseason contests.

-Dubuque picked up where they left off from the third period of last night's game as Mark Cheremeta scored just 46 seconds in to the first period. Cheremeta also added an assist and now has five points in two preseason games.

-In his first preseason action Riese Gaber showed why he has been talked about plenty this offseason. Gaber was flying from the drop of the puck and showcased his wheels and finesse with a nifty goal and an assist to boot. Gaber skated on a line with Cheremeta all night and the two clicked.

-Aidan McCarthy saw his first action of the preseason and made 13 stops on 13 shots before giving way to Erik Portillo in the second period. McCarthy made a few big saves as he kept Dubuque ahead in the early going.

-Dubuque was up 3-0 at one point in the game, but Cedar Rapids never gave in. The RoughRiders kept it close enough the entire way, but never seriously threatened to tie things up.

-Grant Silianoff scored for the RoughRiders to make it a 4-2 game late in the third. Silianoff will be looked at to carry a big load on offense this season as CR won't return many offensive players. Other than the goal, he was largely kept in check.

-Dubuque showcased their ability to roll four lines in tonight's action, much like they did during the game Friday. The Saints seemed dangerous no matter who they trotted over the boards, generating chances from every line.

-Antonio Venuto had another strong game and was rewarded with a gritty goal on a gorgeous tick-tac-toe play with Ryan Beck and Ben Schultheis. Venuto has looked strong through the first two preseason games as he bids for a spot on the Saints roster.

-Ryan Beck also had an impact in his first game of the preseason as he got the primary helper on the Venuto goal, but also made some solid plays along the boards. Matthew Kopperud stood out as well with a goal and good special teams play.

-Dubuque is back in action next Friday and Saturday as they take on Green Bay on the road Friday and home at Mystique Community Ice Center on Saturday.
