Dubose Returns to the Kickers for 2021
February 5, 2021 - United Soccer League One (USL1)
Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Kickers have re-signed defender Devante Dubose for the 2021 USL League One season, pending league and federation approval.
Originally signing with the Kickers in December 2019, Dubose was the first new signing for Chief Sporting Officer and Head Coach Darren Sawatzky ahead of the 2020 season. While the veteran defender's on-field contributions in his first season in the River City were cut short due to his injury, Dubose forged a strong connection with the team, the club and the city of Richmond and was an attractive re-signing for 2021 for his on-field qualities and his commitment to the club and community values.
"Devante is a lightning fast outside back with the ability to get forward in the game," noted Sawatzky. "He ticks every box in regards to the wide positions in our team and we are happy he is back for 2021. We look to him as a veteran in our group and his positive energy is another strong piece to a rock solid locker room."
A native of Oakland, Calif., Dubose played four years at Virginia Tech, making 60 appearances for the Hokies. Following his success at VT, the San Jose Earthquakes selected Dubose with the 66th overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. With family roots in the south, the man who calls Virginia his second home has spent most of his pro career in the West, with stints at FC Tucson, Oklahoma City Energy FC, Phoenix Rising FC, and his hometown Oakland Roots SC. Reflecting on his return to RVA for 2021, Dubose said: "Most importantly, I think for myself, re-signing symbolized a commitment to myself. I will do the work and come back stronger and better for myself. Secondly, it was a 'sign' of support and more so deep belief - from the organization, the front office, the staff, my team, and the community. I have felt an alignment of love and belief, empowerment, and I am more empowered than I have ever been after the events in 2020."
Looking forward to the new challenges and the new season, the reliable right back leaves no questions about how to use 2020 for success in 2021: "My personal goals are as transparent as my team goals this season, and that is to 'feast on adversity.'"
