San Antonio Missions News Release
The Tulsa Drillers might request more games with the Missions.
After all, the matchups seem to be to their liking.
A year after winning nine of the 12 meetings, the Drillers have the early edge this season after taking the rubber game of the three-game series with a 5-4 victory Tuesday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.
The Drillers got the same timely hits as in Monday's 8-7 victory, while turning two of the Missions' three errors into three unearned runs. With the exception of Craig Cooper's four-RBI performance, Tulsa starter Jhoulys Chacin and relievers Jon George, Adam Bright and Shane Lindsay had the advantage by combining for a five-hitter.
"Tulsa's pitching was outstanding," Cooper said. "We finally got something going, but it was too little too late."
After falling behind 3-0, Mike Baxter singled, and Cooper followed with a two-run home run in the fifth.
Two innings later, the Missions were looking at a 5-2 deficit after Cole Garner's two-run single followed a fielding error and an intentional walk.
The Missions had hopes of a comeback in the ninth after Lindsay walked the bases loaded and Cooper lined a two-run single into center. However, the Drillers' closer struck out Seth Johnston to ice the victory.
"We struggled in Corpus Christi, and we had to finish the road trip on a high note," Tulsa manager Stu Cole said. "We got a lot of hits with runners in scoring position. That was a big boost for us."
Notebook: The Boston Red Sox claimed infielder Travis Denker on waivers. Infielder Keoni Ruth has been promoted from Lake Elsinore. ... The Missions embark on their first road trip of the season at 6 p.m. on Thursday, with right-hander Will Inman (0-0, 4.50 ERA) taking the mound against Northwest Arkansas righty Anthony Lerew (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
