Drillers Rally Late But Lose In 10

May 1, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release

The Arkansas Travelers survived a scare Tuesday night as they beat the Tulsa Drillers 9-8 in ten innings at Drillers Stadium. Arkansas starting pitcher Nick Green didn't give up a hit until a Matt Miller single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but thanks to a late Tulsa rally, he did not factor into the decision.

At one point, Green retired 12 straight Drillers. He ended up pitching seven and one-thirds innings, giving up one run, on four hits and two walks, and striking out four.

It was the Traveler relievers, however, that nearly lost the game for Arkansas. With an 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Travelers sent reliever Jose Arredondo to close it out. Aaron Rifkin and Matt Miller both walked to lead off the inning. Chris Frey singled to left field to load the bases. After Christian Colonel popped out to first, Jordan Czarniecki walked to force home a run.

Arkansas manager Bobby Magallanes then called on Rafael Rodriguez. Tommy Duenas greeted Rodriguez with a two-run single to center that cut the Travs' lead to 8-4. Corey Wimblerly was hit by a pitch to load the bases and bring the potential tying run to the plate. After Jonathan Herrera walked to force a run home, Joe Gaetti hit an RBI-bloop single to right that scored Duenas to make the score 8-6. Rifkin, coming up to bat for the second time in the inning, tied the game with a two-run single to center. Gaetti advanced to third on the play to put runners on first and third, with one out and the score tied at 8-8. Miller fouled out to first for the second out, and Frey grounded out to second to end the threat and force extra innings.

The comeback celebration was quickly halted when the Travelers' Bobby Wilson hit a two-out solo home run off Tulsa reliever Judd Songster (1-2) to take the lead 9-8. The game-winner was Wilson's fourth of the year.

Miguel Gonzalez (1-1) came on to pitch the bottom of the tenth, working a 1-2-3 inning to close out the win for the Travs.

The Drillers were forced to stage a comeback after starter Zack Parker got roughed up in the first three innings with most of the damage coming in a five-run third inning. After Adam Morrissey and Freddy Sandoval led off the third with singles, Parker walked Sean Rodriguez to load the bases. Wilson then singled home Morrissey and Sandoval. After Curtis Pride struck out, Aaron Peel hit a three-run homer to left to give the Travelers a 7-0 lead. The homer was Peel's second of the season.

The Drillers will take on the Travelers again Wednesday afternoon when Tulsa's Greg Reynolds (1-1 2.16 ERA) and Arkansas' Daniel Davidson (1-3 2.12 ERA) take the mound. Game time is scheduled for 12:05pm at Drillers Stadium.
