DAYTON, OHIO - As the Dayton Dragons open the second half of the Midwest League split-season, their first three games will be televised from Fifth Third Field on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Time Warner Basic Cable Channel 23 and Digital Channel 372). Games on Thursday, June 20; Friday, June 21; and Saturday, June 22 will be televised. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. all three nights as the Dragons host the Lake County Captains.
Sponsors for Dragons 2013 television broadcasts include John Morrell Food Group, Drake Heating and Air, Greater Ohio Virtual School, DP&L, IUE-CWA, Smoothie King, Cohen Recycling, Skyline Chili, h.h. gregg, and Iworks Laser and Vision Center.
Former Reds first baseman and former Dragons manager Todd Benzinger will be the guest commentator on the Thursday telecast. Hall-of-Fame writer Hal McCoy will serve as the commentator on Friday, and Joe Zerhusen, the Reds Public Address Announcer at Great American Ball Park, will provide commentary on Saturday.
Todd Benzinger was the Dragons manager for the 2009 and 2010 seasons and a key member of the Cincinnati Reds 1990 World Series champions. He recorded the final out of the '90 World Series when he caught a foul pop off the bat of Oakland's Carney Lansford in the ninth inning of game four. He spent nine years as a player in the major leagues with the Reds, Red Sox, Royals, Dodgers, and Giants, playing in 924 major league games.
Hal McCoy has covered the Reds since 1973. He served as the Reds beat writer for the Dayton Daily News through the 2009 season, covering three World Series champions. He currently works for FOX Sports Ohio, writes a regular blog called The Real McCoy, and appears in print every Sunday with his popular "Ask Hal" column. In 2002, he was honored as the winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award by the Baseball Hall-of-Fame for "for meritorious contributions to baseball writing." McCoy was the first non-Cincinnati newsperson elected to the Cincinnati Journalists Hall of Fame. McCoy has won the Ohio Sportswriter of the Year Award 13 times (most recently as the 2013 winner), has been the Cincinnati Baseball Writers Association of America Chapter Chair 22 times, and was the BBWAA national president in 1997.
Joe Zerhusen is in his 11th season as the public address announcer at Great American Ball Park. He previously served as the P.A. announcer for University of Cincinnati football and basketball and has been part of the Cincinnati radio scene since 1979. He also currently oversees the Reds 92-station radio network as broadcast and affiliates manager and has active roles on the Reds Winter Caravan and RedsFest events.
The Dragons will televise 25 games from Fifth Third Field this season. The telecasts are produced by the Dragons' in-house production crew. Others who have appeared or are scheduled for appearances as guest commentators this season are:
