San Jose SaberCats News Release

NEW YORK (Mar. 7, 2004) - Aaron Garcia set a SaberCats' opponent record with nine touchdown passes and the New York Dragons (2-3) dealt San Jose (3-1) their first loss of the season, 64-50, Sunday afternoon at Nassau Coliseum.

Garcia threw three TD passes to William Holder, the last coming with 3:06 remaining in the game to give the Dragons a 57-50 lead. After the SaberCats turned the ball over on downs, Garcia connected with Cosmo DeMatteo from 23-yards out for the final score.

Facing a short handed SaberCats secondary with Omarr Smith nursing a hamstring injury, Garcia completed 19-of-21 passes for 285 yards and was named the Offensive Player of the Game.

San Jose QB Mark Grieb set career-highs with 44 pass attempts and 31 completions for 327 yards but threw two interceptions and was sacked twice. James Roe had a game-high 10 receptions for 88 yards and James Hundon caught both of Grieb's scoring passes.

Following Hundon's 14-yard TD catch early in the third quarter, Rashied Davis pounced on a loose ball on the ensuing kickoff for a net recovery score giving San Jose a 47-37 lead at the 11:26 mark.

New York outscored San Jose 27-3 the rest of the way to post just their second win of the year.

The SaberCats return home on Sunday, March 14, to face the Colorado Crush at 5:00 p.m. in the first of a three-game homestand. Tickets are available at all Northern California TicketMaster outlets and the HP Pavilion at San Jose box office.
