Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - The Doubledays scored four runs combined in the first two games of the series before exploding for 10 in a 10-7 win over the Yankees in the series finale.
Auburn scored its first two runs in the very first inning. Rafael Bautista walked and Andrew Stevenson moved him to third with a single to start the bottom of the first. Bautista then came in to score when Rhett Wiseman reached on a fielder's choice and Stevenson was safe at second on an error. Max Schrock later hit a single into left to load the bases with one out. Stevenson then walked in from third on a sacrifice fly from Ian Sagdal.
In the top of the second, the Yankees re-took the lead when they scored four runs. The first four hitters all scored thanks to an error on the shortstop Ian Sagdal, two singles, a triple, and a double.
After a scoreless third and top of the fourth, the Doubledays drew closer. In the bottom of the fourth, Sagdal walked and was moved to third by a single from Melvin Rodriguez. Jake Jefferies then brought in Sagdal with a sacrifice fly of his own. At the time, the Doubledays trailed 4-3.
In the fifth, both teams put up crooked numbers. In the top of the inning, Staten Island scored three. The Yankees took a 7-3 lead thanks to a pair of singles, a double, and a triple, all with two outs. But the Doubledays didn't wait long to take back the lead.
With one out, Stevenson doubled into left. He then scored on an odd play. Wiseman swung and missed at strike three in the dirt with Stevenson stealing third. Instead of throwing to first to get Wiseman out, Yankees' catcher KJ Alexander overthrew third baseman Drew Bridges, which allowed Stevenson to score and Wiseman to advance to second. Wiseman moved to third on a single by David Kerian and then scored on a double by Max Schrock. Rodriguez later drove in Schrock and Kerian on a single before Sagdal, who walked after Schrock's double, scored on a groundout from Jefferies. That gave the Doubledays an 8-7 lead.
In the seventh, the Doubledays added an insurance run. With the bases loaded, Sagdal scored from third on a wild pitch and the Doubledays went up 9-7. Auburn added another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Wiseman to score Randy Encarnacion from third. That gave the Doubledays a 10-7 lead.
Tommy Peterson came out of the bullpen in the ninth, and retired the Yankees in order to preserve the victory.
The Doubledays have Tuesday off before a three-game road trip against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in Niles, Ohio Wednesday through Friday. All three games are scheduled for 7:05 PM.
