Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - Daniel Dorn and Bill Rinehart gave the Louisville Bats (20-44) more than enough power in a 9-5 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (35-28) in the opening game of a four game series at Frontier Field on Saturday night.
Louisville jumped out the early 1-0 lead in the top half of the second. With two outs in the inning, Cody Puckett roped an RBI single just out of the reach of Chris Dickerson allowing Mike Costanzo to score easily from third. The Bats wouldn't hang on to the lead for long as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre countered with one run of its own to knot the score at 1-1. Colin Curtis led off the home half of the second with a single down the left field line and later scored on a Brandon Laird double, which tagged the left-centerfield wall.
The Yankees eventually took the lead in the bottom of the third when Corban Joseph roped a triple to straight away center and then scored on a passed ball from Louisville starting pitcher Chad Reineke. However, the Yankees didn't enjoy the 2-1 lead for very long. In the top of the fourth Dorn took Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Delin Bettances deep over the right field wall making it a 4-2 ball game in favor of the Bats. In the very next inning, Rinehart followed suit with a three-run blast of his own and the Louisville lead swelled to 7-2.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got one back in the bottom half of the sixth on yet another RBI double by Laird. Despite getting one back in the inning, the Yankees stranded runners on second and third as Doug Bernier grounded out Louisville reliever Nick Christiani to end the inning. Louisville added two more insurance runs when Willie Harris roped a two-RBI double down the right field line making it a 9-3 ball game after 7 1/2 innings of play.
The Yankees threatened in the bottom half of the eighth as they got two runs on a bases loaded walk by Bernier and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kevin Russo. The Russo sacrifice fly was a very loud out as it nearly got out of the park, sailing all the way to the warning track in left-center. With two outs in the inning, Ronnier Mustelier came to the plate with the bases loaded and represented the tying run, but the Yankee left fielder bounced into a fielder choice to the shortstop and ended the inning and the Yankee scare.
Betances suffered the loss, falling to 3-5 on the season for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The tall right-hander allowed seven runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking four. Chad Reineke earned the win for the Bats, improving to 2-4 on the season. In 5.1 innings on the mound, the right-hander allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out four and walking three. Jordan Smith earned the save for the Bats.
The Yankees and Bats take the field again Sunday afternoon at 1:05 for game two of their four game series at Frontier Field in Rochester. D.J. Mitchell (5-2, 5.22) takes the hill for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while Toledo sends Tim Gustafson (0-1, 6.75) to the mound.
