Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release

HIDALGO, TX: July 2, 2004 – The arenafootball2 (af2) Rio Grande Valley Dorados made their final roster moves for their Saturday night home contest against the Wichita Stealth with the activation of lineman Danny Perez from the injured reserve list. Perez has been added to the team's active roster and to fit him in, the team placed fullback/linebacker Jermaine Shepard on re-assignment.

Perez, a 34 year-old Elsa, Texas native, was one of three players that left the June 12th contest against Tulsa early, as he left with a hamstring injury. He returns to the Dorados active roster with 10 tackles (7 solo), 1 forced fumble and 2 sacks in 9 games. Perez, who also serves as a high school football coach at Edcouch-Elsa High School, has even filled in at the fullback position and has 2 carries for 10 yards.

Leaving the Dorados is Houston native Jermaine Shepard. The 6'0" 240-pound fullback/linebacker appeared in 5 games with the Dorados and had 7 carries for 26 yards (3.7 avg.) to rank third on the squad on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, Shepard grabbed 3.5 tackles (3 solo) and recorded a sack, forced fumble and a blocked kick. The Northwestern St. product was playing in his first pro season and he was coming off his best defensive game, as he recorded a pair of tackles including a forced fumble and a sack. Rio Grande Valley makes the moves in preparation to end their current seven game winless streak this Saturday night at the Dodge Arena against the Wichita Stealth, who started the streak. The Stealth defeated the Dorados 35-28 on May 8th at the Dodge Arena and have since gone 2-4. Wichita was on a bye week this past week and their last game was a 62-34 loss against Tulsa. The last time the two teams faced off, Will Burch was the signal caller for the Dorados and Aaron Sparrow was the quarterback for Wichita. Both players are no longer on the team's rosters and Wichita now has former Kansas State standout Jonathan Beasley running the offense. Beasley is averaging 175 yards per game and has thrown 23 touchdowns in 5 games. Saturday's contest will be televised live on Televisa's XERV Channel 9 (19-cable) with Chris Due, Coach Al Guerra and Jeffrey Salcedo providing the action. It will also be carried over the radio and internet airwaves courtesy of ESPN Radio 1240 AM and MyRGV.COM with Josh Bogorad doing the play-by-play honors.

It will be a patriotic celebration this Saturday, as Airastar national recording country music artist and Alice, Texas native Kelly Kenning will be performing at the BudZone FanZone outside the Dodge Arena beginning at 4 PM and he will play until the Dorados 7:30 PM kickoff against the Wichita Stealth, in which the Dorados will be wearing special commemorative patriotic themed jerseys. The jerseys are made possible by the United States Border Patrol and they will be auctioned off to the fans immediately following the game. Individual tickets are currently on sale and may be purchased by stopping by the Dodge Arena offices (2600 N. 10th St. in Hidalgo, Tx) or ordering by phone at 956-843-7825. Additional ticket information and corporate opportunities are available by contacting the Dorados offices at 956-843-7825 or visit the Dorados online at www.doradosfootball.com.
