Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release
HIDALGO, TX: December 8, 2004 â The Rio Grande Valley Dorados of arenafootball2 are excited to announce they have been assigned lineman Josh Tubbs by the af2 for the 2005 season.
"Josh gets after the quarterback," said Dorados Head Coach Kevin Guy. "He has the background we are looking for and presents the ability to upgrade our line, which is a main goal of mine so that our quarterbacks are protected."
Tubbs is a native of Belton, Texas and spent last season with the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. He joined the Battle Wings halfway into the season and was limited to two games due to injury. The 6'2" 300-pound lineman collected 3 assisted tackles for 1.5 total tackles in the two games. One of the assisted tackles came on 6/18/04 in a contest against the Rio Grande Valley Dorados.
Before turning pro, the 24 year-old Tubbs completed his college career at Texas State University (San Marcos, TX). He was originally recruited by the University of Houston and earned a starting role with the Cougars as a redshirt freshman in 2000. He appeared in 11 games and collected 21 tackles (14 unassisted) and had 3 tackles for a loss, 8 qb-hurries, and a pair of forced fumbles, fumble recoveries and pass breakups to earn a spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. Tubbs transferred to Texas State the following season and played with the Bobcats from 2001 - 2003. He combined for 127 tackles (63 unassisted), 22 tackles for a loss and 5.5 sacks. Tubbs claimed pre and post season Second Team All-Southland Conference honors in his senior campaign (2003) and was one of five Team Captains. He prepped at Belton High School and was the District 25-4A Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year in 1998. The Second Team All-State member (as voted by the Texas Sportswriters Association) had 143 tackles (63 unassisted), 15 tackles for a loss, 10 sacks, 5 forced fumbles and 2 blocked kicks. He received various accolades from various state publications and also lettered in track, placing sixth in the shot put in Class 4A.
Tubbs is the first Texas born player assigned to the Dorados 2005 roster and the fourth overall, joining John Bradley (OL/DL), Josh Kellett (QB) and David Morrill (FB/LB).
The Dorados kick-off their 2005 campaign April 9th at the Dodge Arena, as they host the Louisville Fire. Season ticket packages and advertising opportunities are available by contacting the Dorados offices at 956-843-7825.
