Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Daytona, FL) - The Vero Beach Dodgers began the 2nd Half of the Florida State League season with a 4-1 loss at Daytona Thursday night. Mark Holliman pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings for the Cubs to improve to 5-4. The series continues Friday night with a 7:05 first pitch at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona.
The Cubs took advantage of extra baserunners early against starter Jonathan Figueroa (0-3). Jemel Spearman drew a two-out walk in the third and scored on Ryan Harvey's double to make it 1-0. In the fourth, Jeff Culpepper and Andy Lane took back-to-back walks to start the inning and Jake Muyco reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Jonathan Mota then grounded to third. Vero Beach third-sacker Carlos Santana stepped on third for the first out, but then threw home. The runner was never tagged and since it was no longer a force play the run counted and Daytona led 2-0. Muyco then scored on a ground out to give the Cubs a three-run lead.
Mike Megrew relieved Figueroa and turned in his longest appearance of the year. He faced the minimum his first two innings before allowing his first hit of the season, a leadoff double to Mota in the 7th. He eventually came around to score to push Daytona to a 4-run cushion.
Albenis Castillo pitched a perfect 8th for the Dodgers. He now has 13 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, the longest stretch by a Vero Beach pitcher this year.
The Dodgers lone run came in the 9th. Xavier Paul reached on a leadoff error and Blake DeWitt walked. Drew Locke hit into a force out and Cory Dunlap singled in Paul before the comeback bid fell short.
