Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Jupiter, FL) - Cory Dunlap and Xavier Paul each homered as the Vero Beach Dodgers topped the Jupiter Hammerheads 6-2 at Roger Dean Stadium Sunday afternoon. The win pulled the Dodgers 2nd Half record to 2-2, marking the first time in either half other than 0-0 the team has been at .500. The series in Jupiter continues Monday at 7:05 PM.

Vero struck early against Trevor Hutchinson, who beat the Dodgers at Holman Stadium Tuesday night. Drew Locke drilled a double to center with two outs in the first inning and Anthony Raglani singled him home for a 1-0 lead. Adolfo Gonzalez doubled in the second and scored on a David Nicholson base hit to put the Dodgers ahead 2-0.

The lead grew in the third when Dunlap led off with a home run. It was his 7th home run in 35 games, matching his total from 121 games last year. Later in the inning, Cole Bruce reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Nicholson's second RBI single of the day.

The 4-0 lead was all starter Chris Malone would need. He kept the Hammerheads scoreless until the sixth when he surrendered solo home runs to Brad McCann and Juan Carlos Muniz. The win improved Malone's record to 2-4 and was his first victory since beating Jupiter on April 17.

The bullpen was even more impressive. Mike Megrew dealt two innings and struck out five of the six hitters he has faced. Megrew was a Rule 5 Draft Pick of Jupiter's parent ballclub, the Marlins, but was returned to the Dodgers after Spring Training. Julio Pimentel then pitched a perfect ninth to seal the victory.

Vero Beach put the game out of reach with two late runs. Locke singled in the seventh and went to third on a wild pickoff throw. Dunlap came through with a sacrifice fly to bring him home. Paul then led off the ninth with his team-high 8th home run of the year. He also extended his hit streak to nine games, which includes seven multi-hit efforts.
