Dodgers end first half with 9-1 loss

(Vero Beach, FL) - The Vero Beach Dodgers committed a season-high six errors en route to a 9-1 defeat by the Jupiter Hammerheads Wednesday night at Holman Stadium. The Dodgers end the First Half with a record of 26-42, good for 6th place in the Florida State League East Division. The Second Half begins Thursday night with a 7:05 PM game in Daytona. Dodger manager Luis Salazer held the team after the game to run sprints around the bases and various other drills following the performance. In the last two games the Dodgers have scored just four runs despite 22 hits, 10 walks and a hit batter. The Dodgers ended the First Half with seven losses in the last 10 games. Jupiter picked up their first run in the second inning off Kyle Wilson, who made just his second start of his career. Brad Davis walked with two outs on four pitches, went to second on Brian Cleveland's single and scored on Steve Gendron's base hit to make it 1-0. The lead for Jupiter ballooned in the third when Carlos Piste and Grant Psomas drew back-to-back walks. Brad McCann then reached on an infield hit. Piste scored on the team's first error, a wild pickoff throw. Juan Carlos Muniz then doubled in the other two baserunners to put the Hammerheads on top 4-0. The deficit continued to grow for Vero Beach in the sixth. Cleveland reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on another wild pickoff attempt. Steve Gendron then reached safely on a booted ball at short that brought home Cleveland. Vero would finally get on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Adolfo Gonzalez led off with a walk, went to second a ground out and scored on a 2-out single from Gabriel Gutierrez. Jupiter put the game out of reach in the ninth. Cleveland led off with a double and when he attempted to steal third the throw sailed into left to make it 6-1. Later in the inning Jai Miller reached on an infield single and advanced to third when Dante Brinkley got on after an error at third. Piste knocked a ground-rule double to scored Miller for a 6-run lead. Grant Psomas singled in Brinkley for an 8-1 advantage. McCann got on after an error at short to plate Piste and finish the 9-1 victory. Anthony Raglani and Xavier Paul turned in 2-hit nights for the Dodgers. It was the third straight multi-hit game for Raglani, who is batting .538 over that stretch. Scott Elbert dealt two scoreless relief innings in his first appearance out of the bullpen for the Dodgers. He struck out the side in fourth inning and leads Vero Beach with 77 strikeouts in 70 innings.
