Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Daytona, FL) - The Daytona Cubs rallied to defeat the Dodgers 5-4 Saturday night at Holman Stadium. Cole Bruce hit his sixth home run in a losing cause to the Cubs. The series continues Sunday at 6:05 PM. Vero Beach held a lead for the majority of the game. Bruce drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the 1st inning to put the Dodgers ahead 1-0. Daytona answered immediately off Adam Thomas, who made his first start since re-joining the Dodgers from AA Jacksonville. Sam Fuld, fresh off the DL, led off with a double and Nate Spears walked. Matt Craig singled in Fuld to tie the score. Spears came in when Craig got caught in a rundown after a pickoff attempt and the throw home was dropped for an error. Vero Beach came right back. David Nicholson led off the 2nd with a single and stolen base. A grounder advanced him to third, then Xavier Paul walked. Blake DeWitt singled home the tying run and Paul later came in after an error and a ground out to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead. Bruce launched his home run in the 3rd to put the Dodgers ahead 4-2. Meanwhile, Thomas settled down. The 27 year-old set down 12 in a row before Fuld reached on an infield hit with two outs in the 5th. Fuld stole second and scored on Nate Spears' double to pull the Cubs within 4-3. However it was lead the bullpen could not hold. Julio Pimentel (2-7) entered in the sixth and began well. He retired the first two batters before Jemel Spearman doubled to left. Matt Ciaramella followed with single to tie it. After a walk, Jonthan Mota delivered a base hit to give Daytona the 5-4 lead and eventually the win.
