Wachusett Dirt Dawgs News Release

LEOMINSTER, Mass. - With the first week of the 2013 FCBL season in the books, the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs hold a record of 1-4.

"On the field, we've been in every game this season," said Scott Lettre, Director of Baseball Operations for the Dirt Dawgs. "If we cut down on some errors, I think we'll be at the top of the standings come the end of the season.

"As the saying goes: It's not how you start the season, it's how you finish it."

The Dirt Dawgs started the season off on the right foot, defeating the Torrington Titans 7-4 on opening day. Starting pitcher, Nick Filloramo (Wheaton College) went five strong innings allowing only 4 hits. He held the Titans scoreless and had nine strikeouts on the night.

The Dirt Dawgs have since dropped their past three games, falling to the Martha's Vineyard Sharks 8-4, North Shore Navigators 6-5, Pittsfield Suns 13-0, and Nashua Silver Knights 4-3.

Although the Dirt Dawgs had a tough week record wise, two players on the team were recognized as FCBL Players of the Week. Filloramo was named the Pitcher of the Week for his efforts on the mound against the Torrington Titans, while Jamill Moquete (UMass Boston) was named Hitter of the Week.

Moquete has been on a tear to start the season, hitting .316 with six hits, five runs scored, and four RBIs over the first five games.

Moquete has been hitting for power also, with two doubles and two homeruns. He leads the Dirt Dawgs in runs scored, extra base hits, homeruns, and RBIs.

Several other Dirt Dawgs have had strong starts from the dish. Tyler Mikrut (SEMO) and Derek Lowe (William & Mary) have stood out so far. Mikrut is hitting .350, good for seven hits, three runs scored, and a homerun.

Lowe, who joined the team late due to William & Mary reaching the D1 NCAA Tournament, is hitting .400 with six hits and three RBIs. Lowe has also shown a sharp eye at the plate as he has drawn a team high four walks.

The Dirt Dawgs, who play at Doyle Field, have three upcoming home games this week: Friday, June 21st at 4:15pm, Saturday, June 22nd at 6:35pm, and Tuesday, June 25th at 6:35pm. Be sure to check out their website at www.dirtdawgsball.com for more information.
