July 13, 2013 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Wachusett Dirt Dawgs News Release
LEOMINSTER, Mass. (Saturday, July 13, 2013). Tonight, the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs showed resiliency.
After relinquishing a five run lead in the sixth, the Dirt Dawgs (12-15) came back to score eight runs in the seventh, defeating the Seacoast Mavericks 13-5.
"The team showed great character tonight," said Scott Lettre, director of baseball operations for Wachusett. "We had a lead, lost it, but fought back to earn the victory. I think this past week the team has really come together and shown what we're capable of.
This is our first ever four game winning streak and I'm excited to see where this season takes us."
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when the Dirt Dawgs jumped on Mavericks' starting pitcher David Drouin (Hartford) for four runs.
Jamill Moquete (UMass Boston), the top hitter in the FCBL, led off the frame with a solo shot to left field. Moquete went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Billy Wright (Judson) then hit a two-run double, and Tim Corey (Colby) added a sac fly RBI to extend the lead to 4-0. Wright had three RBIs on the night, thanks to two hits.
The Dirt Dawgs added another run in the fifth, as Tyler McVicar's (Elon) sac fly to center scored Derek Lowe (William & Mary), pushing Wachusett's lead to 5-0. McVicar went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Wachusett starting pitcher Thomas Fitzpatrick (Curry) was pitching a gem through five full innings. Up to then, he had only allowed two hits and held the Mavericks scoreless.
It was the sixth inning when the Mavericks (12-20) solved Fitzpatrick, scoring five runs to tie the game at five. Victor Sorrento (Sacred Heart), Ryan Coppinger (Canisus), Rob Hogenkamp (Georgia College), and Mike Mastriberti (SNHU) all had RBIs in the frame.
Fitzpatrick took a no decision on the evening.
Dalton Keck (Lipscomb) then came in relief for Fitzpatrick, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings while scattering four hits and striking out two. Keck earned the win, moving to 1-4 on the season.
Brad Applin (URI) took the loss for Seacoast, moving to 2-2.
The Dirt Dawgs will look to make it five in a row when they travel to Brockton tomorrow to take on the Rox. First pitch is at 5:05 PM.
