Dillon Ward Selects New Autograph
July 21, 2014 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - In his rookie season in the National Lacrosse League, goaltender Dillon Ward penned a great first chapter to his professional career. A finalist for the league's Rookie of the Year award (which will be announced later this summer), the Ontario native's popularity grew throughout the season, resulting in him signing more and more autographs.
After years of criticism for his illegible penmanship, the 23-year-old asked Mammoth fans for their help - to create a new autograph for him. On Saturday night, as Ward led Team Canada to the gold medal at the FIL World Lacrosse Championships, he picked his favorite and inked the new "ËJohn Hancock' for the first time.
"Thank you to all of the Mammoth fans who submitted entries," said the netminder. "There were so many great options, but ultimately I picked one that best suits my taste and writing ability!"
The selection belonged to Nathan Von Rentzell, a Mammoth fan now living in Nebraska. The winning submission features an intertwined "ËD' and "ËW', followed Ward's jersey number (45).
"I am so amped that Dillon chose the signature that I designed," said Von Rentzell. "As a diehard fan of both the Colorado Mammoth and lacrosse in general, this is a huge honor for me."
Von Rentzell met Ward after Saturday's championship game, and was presented with Ward's first new signature on the rookie's Mammoth game jersey.
Given how Ward played in his first year in the NLL and on the international stage in his first world championship, it's safe to say the signature Von Rentzell created for Ward will get plenty of use.
