Amarillo Dillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas Baseball Club announced today that outfielder Keanon Simon has been traded to the Kansas City T Bones, Northern League, in exchange for a player to be named later. A native of Allen Oklahoma, Simon was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 25th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
Simon spent two years in the Pirates farm system playing in the New York-Penn League (R) and the South Atlantic League (A) with the State College Spikes and the Hickory Crawdads, respectively. Simon was released by the Pirates following the 2008 season making him a free agent.
Signed by the Amarillo Dillas on June 1, 2009, Simon played in 71 games batting.350 with 18 doubles to go with 3 triples while stealing 36 bases in 38 attempts. The speedy five-foot ten centerfielder led the Dillas in three offensive categories including batting average (.350), Runs Scored (78), and Doubles (18) while finishing second in Stolen Bases (36) behind left fielder Stantrel Smith (37).
Not only did Simon lead the Dillas in the offensive categories mentioned above but he set a team record when he received 843 votes by fans for "Team Most Valuable Player Award" that was conducted through online balloting on the team's website at seasons' end. The overwhelming choice the award winner came as no surprise to anyone including Dillas' Field Manager Brady Bogart. "Keanon (Simon) is type of player that teenagers should model themselves after on how to play the game based on the way he plays the game", Bogart said. "He easily could have been chosen United League Player of the Year and is a key reason for us (Dillas) winning our second consecutive championship".
So if you are a Dillas' fan you might question why you trade away a player who has the ability to make such an impact on offense. Playing independent baseball is many things for its' players including a second chance at living the dream of playing in the big leagues and for Simon, a move to the Northern League is a step closer to that journey. "Keanon (Simon) has an opportunity to continue his path of getting back to an affiliated organization and in my opinion will do so, we wish him nothing but the best with the T Bones".
The Amarillo Dillas Baseball Club is a charter member of United League Baseball, a Professional Independent League, with six teams playing in Texas. ULB teams are located in Amarillo, Coastal Bend, Edinburg, Harlingen, Laredo, and San Angelo.
