Amarillo Dillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - Saturday, January 9, 2010 was one of the warmest days the region has seen in almost a month despite everything being chili inside the Rex Baxter Building at the Tri-State Fairgrounds. The Amarillo chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation held their 26th Annual Tri-State Open Chili Championship last Saturday to help "grant wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy".
Saturday's fund raising event witnessed over 2,000 area residents taking time from their busy life-schedule to grab a cup of chili from many of the 115 championship entrants, with proceeds benefiting Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Texas Plains. The event was more than just chili with shotgun-toting cowboys, gunslingers, saloon girls, gamblers, outlaws, barkeeps, and live country music which dressed the Rex Baxter Building like a scene right out of an old Clint Eastwood western. The event was emceed by Ed Montana along with host of friends who helped provide entertainment and sharing of the prizes awarded to attendees in exchange for their charitable donations.
As part of their commitment to "Building A Better Amarillo", the Amarillo Dillas were on-hand donating a season ticket package for the upcoming baseball season, which included four Club Level seats, in their effort to help raise much needed funds. "We (Dillas) have been involved with Make-A-Wish for several years and it gives us enormous pleasure to be a part of such a great event", Lee said. "If our donation of season tickets helps make a wish come true then we've served our purpose and that is extremely important to this organization".
Co-director Vickie Childers hoped that Saturday's event would raise about $10,000 and although the official totals aren't in just yet we know one thing for certain, thousands of chili cups were filled for Make-A-Wish. The annual chili cook off crowned another champion this year with the award-winning recipe going to Kathy Mulkey of Hobbs New Mexico.
The Amarillo Dillas Baseball Club is a charter member of United League Baseball, a Professional Independent League, with six teams playing in Texas. ULB teams are located in Amarillo, Coastal Bend, Edinburg, Harlingen, Laredo, and San Angelo.
