Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - Orange County right-hander Reed Dickert struck out 15 and took a no-hit bid into the 8th inning, but settled for eight-and-a-third innings of shutout and his fourth win of the season as the Flyers blanked the Chico Outlaws 5-0 Thursday night at Nettleton Stadium...Orange County taking the rubber match of the three-game series.
The Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning when Dave Bacani led off with a single, went to third when Outlaws pitcher Nick Singleton made an errant pick-off throw and scored on a Scott Goodman sacrifice fly. Goodman delivered again in the 4th, smacking a solo homer to right, putting Orange County up 2-0. Meanwhile, Dickert kept Chico's offense completely in check...and one point retiring 11 in a row and striking out five consecutive batters.
The Flyers struck again in the top of the 8th, and again used the long ball - with two outs and Goodman at first, Peanut Williams cracked a line-drive homer over the right-center field wall...Orange County taking a 4-0 lead. Dickert entered the 8th with the no-no intact and got the first two batters of the inning before Steve Boggs spoiled the no-hit bid by lining a clean double down the left field line. The Flyers scored an unearned run off Outlaws reliever Phil Springman in the 9th to go up 5-0...then Dickert came back out to try to finish off the shutout. He gave up a one out single to Daniel Nava and hit Jason Van Meetren with a pitch...Orange County manager Garry Templeton then elected to go the bullpen. Righty Nick Casanova gave up a single to Todd Gossage to load the bases, but came back to strike out pinch-hitter Jake Ferris and get Jason Matteucci to hit into a game-ending force play to give the Flyers the victory...it was only the second time the Outlaws had been shut out all season.
Dickert (4-3) snapped a personal two-game losing streak with the victory, while Singleton (2-4) lost his second straight decision. Buddy Morales led Orange County's 10-hit attack with a 3-for-4 performance; Goodman and Williams each had two hits and two RBI. Thursday's loss dropped Chico to 3-5 in the second half and knocked the Outlaws into fifth place in the standings...overall, the Outlaws are 28-18. With the win the Flyers upped their second half record to 4-5 and are now 23-24 for the year. The Outlaws continue their nine-game homestand Friday with the first of three against the first place Yuma Scorpions...righty Tyler Pearson (4-3) will be on the hill for Chico in the series opener, while Yuma is expected to start left-hander Charles Merricks (4-1). Game time is 7:05pm...listen to all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
