Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs News Release
LITTLE FALLS, NY - The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs did not need very long to assert their dominance in the inaugural season of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League's Central Division. Just ask the Adirondack Trail Blazers.
The two Mohawk Valley Ryans, Toohers and Hernandez, both clubbed home runs for the Diamond Dawgs, who took advantage of two five-run innings to garner a big win on Thursday, 16-2 over the Adirondack Trail Blazers.
Toohers (Florham Park, NJ/Villanova) kicked off the scoring for the Diamond Dawgs just three batters in with a booming home run to right-center field, scoring himself, Joseph Castellanos (Nutley, NJ/UMass Lowell). LaRocca would add another run in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a passed ball by reliever Anthony Stillwagon (Pittsburgh, PA/Malone) to make his way home for the second time in the game.
Jake Barbiere (Randolph, NJ/Rider) showed he was just as adept on the basepaths as he was in the batters box in the bottom of the fourth, as he would take advantage of another passed ball, this time by reliever Brandon Harris to score another run. Castellanos would find himself on the scorecard as well, bringing home Bruno on a single into the first-second gap.
Hernandez would smash a home run of his own in the bottom of the fifth, smacking a long solo ball to straightaway center. Not to be outdone, Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, NY/LeMoyne) would bring in two runs of his own, knocking a double down the third base line to score Barbiere and Bruno. Castellanos would bring home a run on a double play, while Austin Pollack (Harrison, NY/Manhattanville) brought home Bruno with a well-placed single down the first base line.
The Trail Blazers would finally get on the board in the top of the sixth inning, with a bloop single by Matt Rubayo (Skillman, NJ/Marist) which would score Bradley Roberto (San Diego, CA/Franklin Pierce).
The Diamond Dawgs got their twelve-run lead back and even more, helped along first by another error by the Trail Blazers that brought home Fureno. Pollack would come home as well in the inning, while Toohers would bring home Castellanos.
Adirondack brought home another run, as Rubayo brought home Julio Mercano (Katy, TX/NJIT) with a well-placed single into the outfield. However, that would be all they would get, as relievers Sam Turcotte (Toronto, ON/Stony Brook), Zach Taglieri (Port St. Lucie, FL/The Citadel) and Marc Bisogno (Staten Island, NY/Fordham) stepped up and shut down the Trail Blazers to keep them winless (0-6) on the season.
Aaron Glickstein (Dix Hills, NY/Stony Brook) would pick up the Diamond Dawgs' (5-1) fifth straight win, while Kyle Smyth (Whitby, ON/Niagara) was saddled with the loss for Adirondack.
The Diamond Dawgs' three-game home stand continues on Friday with their annual exhibition game against the Capital City Reds, a traveling team from Canada. The Trail Blazers will look to end their losing streak with a trip to the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds for a game with the Watertown Rapids.
