Diamond Dawgs beat Pilots in battle of division leaders

June 21, 2014 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs News Release

If you looked at this game between the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs and the Newark Pilots on paper, you'd think that either team was playing against themselves. Both teams came into the game with identical 10-4 records, both were leading their divisions, and even their starting pitchers, Ed Lewicki (Arlington, VT/Siena) and Spencer Thomas (Loganville, GA/Georgia College) came in with identical 1.59 earned run averages. They even had the same winning streak: both had arrived at Veteran's Memorial Park in Little Falls sporting four-game winning streaks.

Unfortunately for the Pilots, the game could not end in a tie, as the Diamond Dawgs (11-4) did most of their damage in the first two innings, scoring four runs with two outs in the first and two in the second as they defeated Newark, 6-5.

Newark (10-5) starter Spencer Thomas faced all nine Mohawk Valley batters in the inning. Thomas struggled mightily, and was pulled in the third inning, having only survived two innings and given up all six Diamond Dawg runs. He would get the loss, dropping his record to an even 1-1.

Lewicki would get his first win for Mohawk Valley, bringing his record to 1-0 in three appearances.

The Pilots would claw their way back to a one-run deficit in the 7th, as Luis Silverio (Parkland, FL/Palm Beach State) would hit a 2-run blast to left field. That was as close as the Pilots would come, however, as the Diamond Dawg relievers shut them down in the last two innings to seal the game

With the loss, Newark's four-game winning streak is snapped, while Mohawk Valley's streak is extended to five games.

The Diamond Dawgs go on the road on Sunday to the state capital, as they will face the Albany Dutchmen. The Pilots will try to start a new streak as they head home to face the Watertown Rams.
