Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) - Blake DeWitt hit two home runs, including a three-run shot in the 7th to give Vero Beach the lead, to help the Dodgers to a 6-4 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals Friday night at Holman Stadium. DeWitt leads the Dodgers with 14 home runs and hit three in the four-game series against the Cardinals. Jonathan Meloan earned the win in his Florida State League debut with 4 1/3 scoreless relief innings. As in Thursday's game, Palm Beach took the early lead. Dodgers starter Mike Megrew struggled with his control in the first inning by walking three and hitting one. Matt Dryer added an RBI single and Mike Ferris walked in a run to put the Cardinals ahead 2-0. It became a three-run lead when Ryan Barthelemy's double brought in Juan Lucena, who finished with a three-hit night. Vero picked up a run in the second when Xavier Paul singled in Cory Dunlap who had doubled. The Cardinals answered with a leadoff home run from Colby Rasmus, but DeWitt countered with his first homer of the game in the bottom of the 3rd. That made it a 4-2 game and is where the score stood until the 7th. Juan Apodaca laced a one-out single in the bottom of the innings for the Dodgers. Jamie Hoffmann followed with a walk. Palm Beach then brought in their winningest reliever Matt Scherer. He struck out his first batter but then surrendered the decisive home run to DeWitt. Cole Bruce followed with his own home run to left, putting the Dodgers up 6-4. Kyle Wilson saved his second consecutive ballgame after a stint in the starting rotation. He allowed one hit but tossed a scoreless 9th. The win gave the Dodgers a split of the 4-game series. It is just the third time in the 2nd Half of the season the Dodgers have won back-to-back games.
