Dewar's Teddy Bear Goal not Enough for Silvertips

December 20, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release

EVERETT, Wash. - Tyler Benson (who scored the game winner) and Chase Lang each posted a goal and an assist to answer Connor Dewar's goal on Teddy Bear Toss Night, helping the Vancouver Giants to sneak past the Everett Silvertips, 2-1 before a crowd of 6,201 at XFINITY Arena on Saturday night.

Over 8,400 stuffed animals were thrown to the ice surface for local charity upon Dewar's goal in the first event of its kind hosted by the Tips since 2004-05. Ryan Kubic had 26 saves, and Silvertips counterpart Carter Hart had 25 stops.

Following a scrap between Dawson Leedahl and Dakota Odgers with additional instigator and unnecessary roughness penalties issued to the Giants forward, the Silvertips converted on a double minor power play. Brycen Martin, stationed at the left boards, deflected a feed to Dewar, whose wrister fooled Kubic from the left circle at 2:47 of the first for a 1-0 lead, as fans in attendance encircled the ice surface with over 8,400 stuffed animals.

The Silvertips attack was relentless in the first period, continuing to force good looks at the net after the 10 minute delay to clean the ice. Kubic made 16 saves to keep the score at 1-0, and Vancouver capitalized on their first power play to tie the game in the second period.

Just 13 seconds after a hooking penalty, Benson whipped a centering pass to Lang, who buried a snap shot at 10:23.

The tightly contested game continued late into the third period and Vancouver found its first lead when Benson went to the net and deflected Lang's pass from the right circle around the stick of Carter Hart with 6:14 left in regulation for a 2-1 lead.

The Silvertips responded with several good looks at the net - Patrick Bajkov misfired on a centering pass to the slot, and Remi Laurencelle had a centering pass fall out of reach when he crashed the net at the left post.

Vancouver was hemmed in their own zone for the final minute, but Kubic made one last buzzer-beating save on Cole MacDonald's point shot through traffic, and Laurencelle's follow-up at the goal mouth.
