Devils Sign Defenseman David Schlemko

Newark, NJ - The New Jersey Devils today signed free agent defenseman David Schlemko to a one-year, one-way contract for $625,000. The announcement was made by Devils' Executive Vice President/General Manager Ray Shero.

"David Schlemko is a veteran with five years of NHL experience who brings depth and competition to our defensive corps," said Shero.

Schlemko, 28, totaled 1g-3a-4pts and 12 PIM in 44 NHL games last season with Arizona (20), Dallas (5) and Calgary (19). The 6-1, 190-lb. blue-liner began the season with the Coyotes and was claimed on waivers by the Stars on January 3. Schlemko was then claimed on waivers by the Flames on March 1 and went on to play in each of the club's 11 playoff contests, posting 0g-1a-1pt and two PIM. He also recorded 1g-3a-4pts in two games for Portland (AHL) in 2014-15.

The native of Edmonton, Alberta was signed by Phoenix as an undrafted free agent on July 19, 2007 and spent the first eight years of his professional career (2007-15) with the Coyotes' organization. Schlemko appeared in a career-high 48 NHL games during the 2013-14 campaign and had his most productive season offensively in 2010-11 when he registered 4g-10a-14pts in 46 contests. His career totals show 9g-41a-50pts and 84 PIM in 231 NHL games.

Schlemko's professional experience also includes time spent with Portland, San Antonio (AHL) and Arizona (CHL). He has AHL career totals of 13g-51a-64pts and 56 PIM in 129 games, including a career-high 5g-26a-31pts and 30 PIM with the Rampage in 2009- 10. Schlemko also played three seasons of junior hockey with Medicine Hat (WHL). In 2006-07, he ranked fifth among all WHL defensemen with 8g-50a-58pts while helping lead the Tigers to the league championship and a berth in the Memorial Cup Final.
