Detroit's Katie Smith first to reach 500 WNBA career three-pointers

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Detroit Shock guard Katie Smith became the first WNBA player to notch 500 career three-pointers in Thursday night's 66-56 loss at Indiana. Smith entered the game with 499 career three-pointers made and reached the 500 makes milestone with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter.

Entering the game, Smith averaged 11.6 points, 3.07 rebounds, 3.7 assists (tied for eighth in the league), shooting 89.8% from the free throw line (second in the league), in 36.4 minutes per game (first in the league). The Ohio State University graduate was acquired by the Shock on July 30, 2005 via trade with the Minnesota Lynx. As a member of the Lynx, Smith was named to the Western Conference All-Star Team five times (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005), named to the All-WNBA First team twice (2001, 2003) and the Second Team twice (2000, 2002). The seven-year guard holds WNBA career records for minutes per game (35.3), three-point field goal attempts (1,364) and games played in a single season (35). Smith is also the leading scorer in US women's professional basketball history with 5,323 points scored in the WNBA and ABL.
