Detroit returns to the pitch Saturday, March 2nd, 7:30 kick-off, to battle the San Diego Sockers for the US Open Cup Championship. This year's cup (the fifth annual) paired twenty-six teams from the PASL (Professional Arena Soccer League), the Premier Arena Soccer League, and independent teams across the country in qualifying rounds of an knockout style tourney that led to Detroit facing San Diego in what promises be a real barn burner.
The last time these two teams paired on the pitch was 2012's National final, the Ron Newman Cup, held in San Diego's legendary Del Mar Arena. Detroit fell to San Diego 10-7 in a foul laden, contentious battle. The thirteen time National Champions, San Diego Sockers, recently held a US pro sports record of 48 consecutive wins which was broken January 27th in an overtime loss to the Dallas Sidekicks in a 6-5 stunner.
Detroit WAZA FLO, in its fifth season of play, is a charter member of the PASL and the only professional team in Michigan. Detroit's league, the PASL, is the largest indoor league in the country including teams from Canada and Mexico. Detroit's diverse roster includes men who have played both collegiately and professionally both here in the US and internationally. "We have players who have either played for or hail from Argentina, Jamaica, Brazil, Australia, Malta, Kenya, Serbia, and Canada", said head coach Dominic Scicluna, "It's a pleasure to play with such talent".
